Two points: we have no community. In the past many ran with groups of familiars in their generational cohort and through them met with similar groups and that was the medium through which strangers were made familiar enough to connect. It was much more organic. As a result, we've become atomized and in seeking to reconstruct that world, we've fit it into our screens. This results in reducing everything in our life to an interactive square within our glowing rectangle, our food lever within our Skinner box. Now, we're all a captured audience not unlike those dupes at the video poker in the gas stations in the muddy Midwest of my youth. Sad really, I've found myself more than once become that sun-leathered dupe, cigarette smoldering between lips, staring blankly at card choices, smacking away at the select/discard buttons like a monkey in an experiment.

Explaining life in terms of the statistical theory of entropy
"How would we express in terms of the statistical theory the marvellous faculty of a living organism, by which it delays the decay into thermodynamical equilibrium (death)? We said before: 'It feeds upon negative entropy', attracting, as it were, a stream of negative entropy upon itself, to compensate the entropy increase it produces by living and thus to maintain itself on a stationary and fairly low entropy level.
"If D is a measure of disorder, its reciprocal 1/D, can be regarded as a direct measure of order. Since the logarithm of 1/D is just minus the logarithm of D, we can write Boltzmann's equation thus:

Hence the awkward expression 'negative entropy' can be replaced by a better one: entropy, taken with the negative sign, is itself a measure of order. Thus the device by which an organism maintains itself stationary at a fairly high level of orderliness ( = fairly low level of entropy) really consists in continually sucking orderliness from its environment. This conclusion is less paradoxical than it appears at first sight. Rather could it be blamed for triviality. Indeed, in the case of higher animals we know the kind of orderliness they feed upon well enough, viz. the extremely well-ordered state of matter in more or less complicated organic compounds, which serve them as food stuffs. After utilizing it they return it in a very much degraded form — not entirely degraded, however, for plants can still make use of it. "What is entropy? Let me first emphasize that it is not a hazy concept or idea, by a measurable physical quantity just like the length of a rod, the temperature at any given point of a body, the heat of fusion of a given crystal or the specific heat of any given substance. At the absolute zero point of temperature (roughly - 273°C) the entropy of any substance is zero. When you bring the substance into any other state by slow, reversible little steps (even if thereby the substance changes its physical or chemical nature or splits into two or more parts of different physical or chemical nature) the entropy increases by an amount which is computed by dividing every little portion of heat you had to supply in the procedure by the absolute temperature at which it was applied — and by summing up all the small contributions" (p. 71).
"Much more important for us here is the bearing on the statistical concept of order and disorder, a connection that was revealed by the investigations of Boltzmann and Gibbs in statistical physics. This too is an exact quantitative connection, and is expressed by

x-ray induced mutation in genetic material: the minimum volume required
In discussing x-ray induced mutations in drosophila flies, Schrodinger denotes the method and target as such: No matter the type of radiation source (speaking in terms of x-ray to gamma rays here) as the dosage goes up, so does the mutation rate. The target for measuring this ionization here, aside from those irradiated drosophila flies, is called the 'standard substance,' that being air. It's chosen "not only for convenience, but also for the reason that organic tissues are composed of elements of the same atomic weight as air. A lower limit for the amount of ionizations or allied processes (excitations) in the tissue obtained simply by multiplying the number of ionizations in air by the ratio of the densities. It is thus fairly obvious, and is confirmed by a more critical investigation, that the single-event, causing a mutation, is just an ionization (or similar process) occurring within some 'critical' volume of the germ cell" (p. 44).
So, given a dosage of radiation, this 'critical volume' demonstrates the effects of irradiation through ionization. Ionization is when an atom is hit by a 'packet of energy' enough to excite the electron in its outermost shell, causing it to break off (ionization). In large enough examples, ionization, is at the heart of the photoelectric effect. That is, if you heat something (i.e., add energy to it) you cause that something to give off light. Imagine a person's hand giving off light after being hit by a gamma ray burst from a criticality event. Bad news, dude, bad news.
Now what is this 'critical volume of the germ cell?' That's the specific size (in volume) of genetic material that gets hit by a dose of radiation. Citing the seminal paper on this study of x-ray induced mutation, Schrodinger writes. "He arrives there at a size of only about ten average atomic distances cubed, containing thus only about 10^3 = a thousand atoms. The simplest interpretation of this result is that there is a fair chance of producing that mutation when an ionization (or excitation) occurs not more than about '10 atoms away' from some particular spot in the chromosome" (p. 44).
Armed with this knowledge Schrodinger notes that threats to humanity through ionizing radiation aren't of great concern if known sources of this radiation are regulated. He produces a simple example and leaves with a cautionary note. "To put it drastically, though perhaps a little naively, the injuriousness of a marriage between first cousins might very well be increased by the fact that their grandmother had served for a very long period as an X-ray nurse. It is not a point that need worry any individual personally. But any possibility of gradually infecting the human race with unwanted latent mutations ought to be a matter of concern to the community" (p. 45).
As an aside, I had read a book in my youth called 'The Therapy of Desire' by Martha Nussbaum wherein she outlines the developmental projects of various schools of Greek philosophy, resting upon their approach to both the passions and their obverse, stagnation. The point of her book, and the preliminary work of these Greek schools of thought, was to teach individuals how to regulate themselves optimally as a matter of a personal ethic. Her source material on the Epicureans and the Stoics reveal whole tranches of what would become Christian teaching that it struck me very hard how much of Christianity as it passed through Greek hands carried that very flavor of the learned community working with the basic story of the Χρίστος (Christos). Likewise, here I feel as if Schrodinger is setting the groundwork for a generation of X-men comics and their backstories, namely the fear of irradiation and the prospects that 'just the right dose' could produce a 'superman.' And as we all know, Kal-El, the original Superman derived his source of power from the sun's radiation.

The upshot of Hoffman's ITP in this realization is just how much it 'jives' with Michael Levin's work on xenobots and similar statements concerning consciousness being a fundamental unit of what we see. Likewise, Wolfram's automata and the ruliad guiding their interactions also finds complexity in simple units operating on simple rule sets. And most importantly, his notion is that even these simple structures can be perceived by us as complex because we are merely as complex as them. We can't rule them by constructing a rule that will determine their outcome many discreet moves into the future. We get the same outcome, everything is looking back at us. What we see in the complexity of the world around us is the work of consciousness--ours to see it, and theirs to be seen as such.

I didn't have much of a relationship with my father, never did. Mostly it was because I was beneath the effort he took in abusing his wife, my mother, and his son, my brother. But I wasn't below their abuse.
To repeat, I was beneath my dad's abuse, but I became the resultant recipient of the frustrations of a mother and brother abused by that dad.

Habits of 'frightfulness' in the dealings with external proletariats
On the north-western frontier of Christendom the same story repeats itself. The first chapter is the peaceful conversion of the English by a band of Roman missionaries, but this is followed by the coercion of the Far Western Christians by a series of turns of the screw which began with the decision of the Synod of Whitby in A.D. 664 and culminated in the armed invasion of Ireland by Henry II of England, with Papal approval, in 1171. Nor is this the end of the story. Habits of 'frightfulness', acquired by the English in their prolonged aggression against the remnants of the Celtic Fringe in the Highlands of Scotland and the bogs of Ireland, were carried across the Atlantic, and practised at the expense of the North American Indians. The seductiveness of astrology
In the history of the Babylonic Society, for example, the terrible eighth century B.C., which saw the beginning of the hundred years' war between Babylonia and Assyria, seems also to have seen a sudden great advance in astronomical knowledge. In this age Babylonic men of science discovered that the rhythm of the cyclic recurrence, which had been patent from time immemorial in the alternations of day and night, in the waxing and waning of the Moon, and in the solar cycle of the year, was also discernible on a vaster scale in the motions of the planets. These stars, which were traditionally named 'the wanderers' in allusion to their apparently erratic courses, now proved to be bound by as strict a discipline as the Sun and the Moon and the 'fixed' stars of the firmament in the cosmic cycle of the magnus annus; and this exciting Babylonic discovery had much the same effect as our recent Western scientific discoveries have had upon the discoverers' conception of the Universe.
The never broken and never varying order that had thus been found to reign in all the known movements of the stellar cosmos was now assumed to govern the Universe as a whole: material and spiritual, inanimate and animate. If an eclipse of the Sun or a transit of Venus could be dated to some precise moment hundreds of years back in the past, or predicted with equal certainty as bound to occur at some precise moment in the equally remote future, then was it not reasonable to assume that human affairs were just as rigidly fixed and just as accurately calculable? And since the cosmic discipline implied that all these members of the Universe that moved in so perfect a unison were 'in sympathy'--en rapport--with each other, was it unreasonable to assume that the newly revealed pattern of the movements of the stars was a key to the riddle of human fortunes, so that the observer who held this astronomical clue in his hands would be able to forecast his neighbor's destinies if once he knew the date and the moment of his births? Reasonable or not, these assumptions were eagerly made, and thus a sensational scientific discovery gave birth to a fallacious philosophy of determinism which has captivated the imagination of one society after another and is not quite discredited yet after a run of nearly 2,700 years.
The seductiveness of astrology lies in its pretension to combine a theory which explains the whole machina mundi with a practice which will enable Tom, Dick and Harry to spot the Derby winner here and now. Thanks to this twofold attraction, the Babylonic philosophy was able to survive the extinction of the Babylonic Society in the last century before Christ; and the Chaldean mathematicus who imposed it upon a prostrate Hellenic Society was represented until yesterday by the Court Astrologer at Peking and the Munejjim BBashy at Istanbul. The dialectics behind the growth of civilization (according to Arnold Toynbee)
"In studying the growths of civilizations we found that they could be analysed into successions of performances of the drama of challenge-and-response and that the reason why one performance followed another was because each of the responses was not only successful in answering the particular challenge by which it had been evoked but was also instrumental in provoking a fresh challenge, which arose each time out of the new situation that the successful response had brought about. Thus the essence of the nature of the growths of civilizations proved to be an elan which carried the challenged party through the equilibrium of a successful response into an overbalance which declared itself in the presentation of a new challenge. This repetitiveness or recurrency of challenge is likewise implied in the concept of disintegration, but in this case the responses fail. In consequence, instead of a series of challenges each different in character from a predecessor which has been successfully met and relegated to past history, we have the same challenge presented again and again. For example, in the history of the international politics of the Hellenic World, from the time when Solonian economic revolution first confronted the Hellenic Society with the task of establishing a political world order, we can see that the failure of the Athenian attempt to solve the problem by means of the Delian League led on to Philip of Macedon's attempt to solve it by means of the Corinthian League, and Philip's failure to Augustus's attempt to solve it by the Pax Romana, upheld by a Principate. This repetition of the same challenge is in the very nature of the situation. When the outcome of each successive encounter is not victory but defeat, the unanswered challenge can never be disposed of, and is bound to present itself again and again until it either revives some tardy and imperfect answer or else brings about the destruction of the society which has shown itself inveterately incapable of responding to it effectively." Getting the creeps
If one has ever experienced a bug crawling over one's hand and had a very visceral response to it, I consider that some of that response relates to the subjectivity of that little creature transforming you into a surface to crawl upon, reducing the you to an it. That tiny little agent transformed you into an object.
